Jaisalmer town is located in the Rajasthan
state of North India. It is situated on the cliff of
yellowish sandstone, dignified by a Fort. This Fort
comprises of the palace and several other adorned Jain
temples. The houses and temples of Jaisalmer town are
elegantly carved and embellished. This town is situated in
the heart of the Thar Desert. Having a population of approx.
78,000, Jaisalmer is the administrative headquarters of the
Jaisalmer District. The word “Jaisalmer” means the hill fort
of Jaisal as the town is named after Rao Jaisal. Jaisalmer
is also known as Golden City of India because the yellow
sand all over contributes to a yellowish golden touch to the
city and the enclosed area all around. It is one of the last
states to sign a treaty with the British. Brijraj is the
present descendant of the Jaisalmer town. Although it is
under the administration of the Government of India, a lot
of welfare work is done by him and his family. Main source
of their income was the tax imposed on the carvanas. It is
located on an average elevation of 229 m above sea level.
Jaisalmer is situated on the border of India and Pakistan in
the west of Rajasthan state. With the emergence of Bombay as
a port and the sea trade is replaced from the traditional
land paths, Jaisalmer town’s glory is faded. It has an area
of 5.1 km2. In summer, the maximum temperature is stays
around 41.6oC and the minimum temperature is recorded 25 oC.
The maximum temperature is recorded about 23.6 oC in the
winter season with the minimum temperature of 7.9 oC. The
recorded average rainfall is about 150 mm. There is a
boundless sea of sand hills of different shapes and sizes.
Some sand cliffs have a height of 150 ft. It is covered with
log bushes to the west and clusters of long grass to the
east. Scarcity of water is also there with an average depth
of 250 ft of the walls. There are no perennial streams
except the only small river, the Kakni which is flowing with
a distance of 28 m. It is spreaded over a large surface of
flat ground forming a lake Orjhil “The Bhuj-jhil”. With a
dry and healthy climatic conditions, only rain crops such as
Bajra, Jawar, Motif, Tile are grown in abundance and the
spring crops such as Wheat, Barley are rare here. Jaisalmer
is located at a distance of 864 km from New Delhi, 558 km
from Jaipur, 1117 km from Mumbai and 626 km from Ahmedabad.
Jaisalmer is of really important from the point of elegant
historic structures and monuments. It has become a popular
tourist destination because of its medieval mud fort and the
walled township. Camel safaris are quite popular among
tourists here. Tourist can find the accommodation in the
fort itself but if you are a eco-consious tourist, stay
outside the fort just to avoid extra pressure on the ancient
sewage system. There are three bastions out of the 99
bastions which have crumbled as the water is seeping deep in
the foundations of the fort. The famous director Satyajit
Ray wrote a novel on this fort which was later converted
into a film named Sonar Kella. About a quarter of the whole
city’s population is living in this fort till yet. There are
some major attraction in this fort are Raj Mahal(Royal
Palace), Jain Temples and the Laxmi Nath Temple. Jaisalmer
is quite charming and tranquilizing place which offers camel
safaris to relax and rejuvenate yourself in the sand sea.
You can also go for a jeep safari to enthrall you in the
desert. One can wander lazily in the desert and visit the
palace. Magnificent havelis with sophisticated stone carving
is also worth watching in Jaisalmer.
