Delhi and Mumbai are the two main gateway
cities to Rajasthan from international destinations. The
nearest international airport to Rajasthan is the Indira
Gandhi International Airport (IGI), at New Delhi, about 250
km. The domestic airport, Palam, at Delhi is serviced free
by a coach at regular invervals from the international
terminal and a regular bus service from outside the
international terminal connects the city centre of Cannaught
Place, interstate bus stand at Kashmiri Gate and the New
Delhi Railway Station. Prepaid taxi booth outside the
terminal provides service to the place of your destination
within the city. Facilities of retiring room, money exchange
and cab hire available at all terminals. There are regular
flights connecting Delhi and Mumbai and from Delhi and
Mumbai to Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur in Rajasthan operated
by domestic carriers—Indian, Jet Airways, Kingfisher
Airlines, Go Air and Simplifly Deccan , Spicejet Ltd . There
are direct superfast and other express trains for Rajasthan
from Delhi and Mumbai. Daily superfast trains connect Mumbai
to Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Udaipur. A Shatabdi operates
from New Delhi station to Ajmer via Jaipur, except on
Wednesday. Delhi is also directly connected to Sawai
Madhopur, Bharatpur, Kota and Bikaner.
The International Tourist Bureau at the New Delhi railway
station will help to plan your itinerary, reservation and
render any assistance demanded. Get a copy of the Trains at
a Glance or Time Table available with the book stalls on all
the railway stations which is a handy guide covering all the
trains, routes and timings.
Unreserved train travel and travel in general coaches for
long journeys can be quite uncomfortable and uneasy as they
may get overcrowded. It is always advisable to book in
advance and carry either a confirmed or RAC status ticket
before boarding the train. You can book your ticket in
advance from the computerized ticket offices of Railway
generally located near to the railway stations.
The Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains are totally air-conditioned
one and the fastest on the Indian tracks. The foreign
tourists and Indian residents abroad can also buy Indrail
Passes in foreign currency or its equivalent from the
railway stations at Delhi, Mumbai or even at Jaipur. These
passes can also be obtained through authorised agents of the
Indian Railways abroad. These passes permit unlimited travel
on Indian trains covering all reservations and berth costs
for the period of their validity. The Interstate Bus
Terminal (ISBT) at Kashmiri Gate, near the Old Delhi railway
station has almost a twenty-four hour bus service to Jaipur.
Air-conditioned and Volvoe bus service of state owned
Rajasthan Roadways to Jaipur is operational from the
premises of Bikaner House, Pandara Road near the India Gate,
journey time 4V2 hours. Udaipur in Rajasthan is connected to
Mumbai by a bus service. A car or taxi can be hired on a
kilometre basis charge. The minimum run per day is 250 km.
Self drive car rental in India is very rare and not popular.
Car taxis can be hired which give an opportunity for
sightseeing off the regular tracks and are reasonably
comfortable. The local drivers know a lot about the various
destinations and are able to communicate reasonably well.
The road conditions in Rajasthan and even the district roads
are fairly good.
