Chittorgarh city is located in Rajasthan
state of the western India. It is also a municipality and
administrative headquarters of the Chittorgarh district in
the state of Rajasthan. It is situated on the Berach river
which is a tributary of the Banas. Chittorgarh is the former
capital of the Sisodia family of Rajputs and of Mewar. The
fort of Chittorgarh is seized three times but they fought
the battle bravely each time and each time the Jauhar was
committed by the ladies and children of the Fort. The first
jauhar was committed by Rani Padmini and later by Rani
Karnawati. Chittorgarh Fort is the largest fort of India.
Chittorgarh is the embodiment of Rajput pride, romance and
bravery where people prefer to choose death instead of
surrendering themselves against their enemies. Nobility and
courage of Rajput tradition is a symbol of true essence of
Rajputs. It is believed that Chittor was established by the
Maurya Dynasty in the 9th century AD. This fort is enclosed
by a circular wall with 7 huge gates before entering inside
the chief fort area. Some sources confirmed that the fort
was under the control of the Mori Dynasty when Bappa Rawal
captured the Chittorgarh and made it the capital in 734 AD.
Bappa Rawal is the founder of the Mewar. Other sources
conveyed that Bappa Rawal received it as a dowry by marrying
with the last Solanki princess. Chittorgarh is among the
most fought over places in India. Alauddin Khilji was the
first attacker who infatuated by the beauty of Padmini about
whom he had only heard. Rani Padmini preferred to perform
Jauhar with all the ladies of the fort instead of being
abducted by Khilji. In 1568, Mughal Emperor Akbar seized
Chittorgarh. Chittorgarh is very poplar for its relation
with two greatly known historical personalities of India.
First is Meera Bai, she is first most famous hindu religious
poetess and her verses are completely devoted to Lord
Krishna as she was the most ardent devotee of Lord Krishna.
Second famous personality is Maharana Pratap. Maharana
Pratap was the son of Udai Singh II. He is considered as a
epitome of the values of the Rajputs and admire these values
and courage and died for it. Rajput of the whole Mewar
considered Maharana Pratapa as the greatest valiant among
Rajputs. Chittorgarh holds a special place in the hearts of
Rajputs because of its abundant historic associations.
Chittorgarh is known as the “Bhakti aur Shakti ki Nagari”
means the land of devotion and strength. The biggest Rajput
festival, Jauhar Mela, is also organized by the fort and the
city. This festival takes place on the Anniversary of the
Jauhars, not only for the one performed by Rani Padmini
which is the most famous Jauhars of the Chittorgarh. A large
number of Rajputs that includes the descendants of the most
of the royal families performs a parade to celebrate the
Jauhar.
Chittorgarh Fort, the largest fort, is situated on a hill of
180m and it spreads over an area of 700 acres. Mauryans
constructed it in the 7th century AD.Some sources claimed
that it was constructed by Bhima of the Pancha Pandavas.
This fort was the bastion of numerous glorious Rajput
warriors such as Rana Kumbha, Maharana Pratap, Jaimal, Patta
etc.
Kalika Mata Temple is initially constructed in 8th century
dedicated to Lord Sun but it was transformed to a temple
dedicated to Goddess Kali Mata in the 14th century.
Vijay Stambh is a huge nine storey tower built by Maharana
Kumbha. The aim is to celebrate his victory over the Muslim
rulers of Malwa and Gujurat in 1440. The height of the tower
is 122 ft. and its standpoint is the loft high base. There
are sculptures and carvings on the outside of the walls of
the tower. This tower can be seen from any part of the town.
Images of Gods and weapons are carved on the inside of the
walls.
Kirti Stambh is a tower dedicated to Adinathji. This stambh
was built by a merchant and is ornated with figures of the
Jain pantheon.
Rana Kumbha’s Palace is located near the Vijay Stambh in
Chittorgarh. It is the birthplace of Maharana Udai Singh who
is the founder of Udaipur. Udai Singh was saved by his maid,
Panna Dhay, by replacing him with her son and Banbir killed
her son. She transported the prince Udai Singh in a fruit
basket. Rani Meera Bai also lived in this palace.
