Mandawa is a town located in Jhunjhunu
district of the state of Rajasthan in India. It is a part of
the Shekhawati region located 190 km north of Jaipur.
Mandawa is quite famous for its fort and beautiful
mansions(havelis).Mandawa’s Fort town is very well connected
by a network of roads to the other parts of the region.
Bhojraj Ji Kasubsub has made a thikana in the city of
Mandawa in the 18th century. Bhojraj Ji Kasubsub is related
to the family of Shekhawat Rajputs. Mandawa village was
found by Mandu Jat in earlier days. It was a trading outpost
for the ancient caravan routes who stopped here from China
and the middle east. The Rajput ruler of Nawalgarh and
Madawa, Thakur Nawal Singh, built a fort in 1755 to protect
the outpost of Mandawa. The town surrounded around the fort
attracted a large community of traders. Mandawa is located
at an elevation of 316m(1036ft.). It has four villages named
bazisar Kamalsa Kuharu and Godukas bas in the north and
three villages in the east named tetara(Chandrpura), Syopura
and hanumanpura(dular Kas bas) and Mithvas, dinwa ladhkhani
in the south side and Sadinsar, tihawali and dabari in the
west side of Mandawa. Mandawa Fort was founded in the 18th
century. Thakur Nawal Singh was the son of Shardul Singh. He
founded the fort in vikram samvat 1812(1755 AD). There is a
gateway decorated with Lord Krishna and his cows in the fort
town. The rooms are adorned with paintings of Lord Krishna,
beautiful carvings and nice mirror work. Numerous antiques
and paintings are used as decoration in the Durbar Hall of
palace. The Mandawa Fort is located in the center of the
town. Now, this Mandawa Fort has been converted into a
heritage hotel. Mandawa town has been called as “open art
gallery” of Rajasthan state as the entire Shekhawati region
has lavishly designed and decorated havelis and forts. There
is Hanuman Prasad Goenka Haveli decorated with paintings of
Indra Dev or an elephant and Lord Shiva. Goenka Double
Haveli has towering face of elephants and horses with two
gates. Jhunjhunwala Haveli has attractive gold leaf painted
room. This room is situated to the right of main courtyard.
Mohan Lal Saraf Haveli has a picture of Maharaja who is
fndling his moustaches. This beautiful picture has increased
the royalty of the haveli.
