Udaipur is a city located in the Udaipur
district of Rajasthan in India. Udaipur is a municipal
Council and the administrative headquarters of the Udaipur
district. This city is also called City of Lakes. Udaipur is
the noteworthy capital of the former kingdom of Mewar in the
Rajputana Agency. It is quite famous for its historic Rajput
palaces. Lake Palace is quite famous palace of Udaipur. This
palace spread over an entire island in the Pichola Lake.
Now, these palaces have been converted into luxury hotels.
Some beautiful lakes of the city of Udaipur are Lake Pichola,
Fateh Sagar Lake, Udai Sagar and Swaroop Sagar. It has a
tropical climate with the temperature varies between 42.3oC
(max.) and 28.8 oC during the summer season. In winter, it
is quite cold here and temperature varies between 28.8 oC
(max.) to 2.5 oC. Rajput kingdom of Mewar was ruled by the
Sisodia family. Rana Udai Singh was the founder of the city
Udaipur. Nagda, the former capital of Mewar, was situated on
the Banas River northeast of Udaipur. A legend is also there
related to the foundation of Udaipur. It says that once
Maharana Udai Singh met with a hermit during the course of
hunting in the foothills of the Aravalli Range. The hermit
blessed the king and asked him to build a palace on the spot
as the hermit considered this place as well protected.
Therefore, Udai Singh built his residence there. In 1568,
when Mughal Emperor Akbar seized Chittor then Udai Singh
moved to the capital to his residence and this place became
Udaipur. After some time, the mughals weakened then the
Sisodias and later maharanas delared their independence and
recaptured most of Mewar except Chittor.
